Description

Canvas is a game about exploring a blank world using painting as your primary form of interaction. The player explores unique areas and tries to discover everything hidden throughout the environment. As they progress they get more efficient at painting, unlock new colors, and can recolor a broken world to discover it's history.

History

Years ago, this game started as a horribly optimized demo of a simple idea: nothing can be seen until you paint on it. This demo was very limited and featured hacked together implementations but the concept worked.

It was a whole new way to play, a new way to explore, a new way to experience 3D spaces.

Everyone that played it definitely had questions, they saw the potential, and it seeing this reaction meant the concept had room to grow.

Brandon and Doug began working on an expansion to the idea together in their spare time. What kinds of interactions were possible? What kind of game-play loop supported a game based around such a strange core mechanic? How can we amplify the player expression inherent to painting?

This resulted in a demo for a game based around painting to explore and logic puzzles based on the elements of the environment that could only be painted certain colors. This demo was a huge technical step forward and got an even bigger reaction. Players could see the potential in the idea, but it wasn't quite reaching it.

Finally, the current iteration of the project was born. What was the most important elements of the mechanic? The design? What were people most enjoying when they played? These small chunks of the game we had made allowed us to really see what kind of game people were after and so we made a new version of Canvas focused on exploration, expression, and discovery.

This current version features large open areas that require the player to plan out their path and paint from their exploration builds an ever increasing series of known and unknown areas. The player is constantly looking for new locations, new upgrades, and new sources of paint to satiate their curiosity.

Several surfaces and objects in the world react to certain colors of paint let the player figure out shortcuts, hidden areas, and rebuild long decayed parts of the world. The only thing left to do is paint away and return color to a pallid world!
